Wooden Bird Feeders – Are they the Right Choice for You?

April 15th, 2010 wwiii No comments

Wooden Bird Feeders

Wooden Bird FeedersWooden bird feeders are probably some of the oldest styles of bird feeders. These decorative designs are constructed from various woods but are typically made using redwood and cedar. Styles and prices vary from the basic platform feeders to architecturally designed cottages and gazebos.

Advantages of Wooden Bird Feeders

Wooden bird feeders have several advantages over bird feeders constructed of other materials such as plastic and metal. First and foremost although the price range is pretty wide wooden bird feeders are generally cheaper than those made from plastic or metal in similar designs.

Secondly wooden bird feeders can easily be customized to suit your tastes by painting or staining them to get the desired look and feel that fits your style and landscaping.

Another advantage is that wooden bird feeders made from cedar or redwood are weather, rot and insect resistant so they will remain strong and sturdy for several years.

Maintaining Wooden Bird Feeders

Unfortunately there are also some disadvantages to using wooden bird feeders also, most will tend to weather and fade over time without some kind of protection. Wood feeders made from Cedar or redwood will not fade as quickly as those made from pine or other woods.

To maintain the original color of your cedar or redwood bird feeder, you can coat it with linseed oil or a non-toxic wood sealer every year or two. Be sure you apply only to the outside of the feeder and not to the feeding surface of the feeder.

You can also use the above method for wood bird feeders made from pine and other woods or you can paint them with a non-toxic exterior paint following the same rules listed above (paint only the non-feeding surfaces). As time passes the paint may need to be redone. In this case make sure that you remove as much of the old flaking paint as possible with a wire brush or sandpaper before repainting.

Cleaning Wood Bird Feeders

Perhaps the biggest disadvantage of wooden bird feeders is that they are a little more difficult to keep clean and sanitized. You should clean your wooden feeders more often than you would a plastic or metal bird feeder to help prevent the spread of disease.

To clean your wood birdfeeders, use hot water and a mild bleach or vinegar solution and a bristle brush. Be sure to let thoroughly dry before adding fresh seed or other wild bird foods.

Copper Bird Feeders a Touch of Class

Copper Bird Feeders

Decorative Copper Bird Feeder

Decorative Copper bird feeders can add a touch of class to your backyard bird feeding sanctuary, patio or garden. Very few other metal bird feeders can compete with the beauty and class of even the simplest copper bird feeders.

Whether you are looking for hand-crafted copper bird feeders that are made completely from copper or a feeder that has just a touch of copper to add a dash of elegance and class you will have many to choose from.

Advantages of Copper Bird Feeders

One of the biggest advantages to using copper bird feeders to decorate your garden is the natural anti-bacterial properties of copper helps to prevent the spread of disease among the birds visiting your feeding stations.

Copper bird feeders are extremely durable and you may only ever have to buy one because some copper bird feeders can last a lifetime thanks to coppers weather and pest resistant properties.

Copper Bird Feeders and Patina Control

We all know about the beautiful green patina or “verdigris” that copper bird feeders will develop over time but did you know that there are ways that you can actually speed up or slow down the process?

Here are a few ways to speed up the patina development of your copper bird feeders, but before your begin there are a couple of things you should know.

First you need to be aware that your results will vary widely and you should proceed with a little bit of caution. Not that you will ruin your feeder just that the final colors will differ and can be unpredictable to some extent.

Second make sure you use safety equipment such as rubber glove and eye protection when using chemicals to achieve that old-world appearance that normally takes years to develop.

Before you start make sure all the copper parts or your feeder are well cleaned and free of any dirt, grease or grime.

These solutions can be applied to the copper via spray bottle, paint brush, sponge or rag. The patina normally appears after the copper has dried completely and it may take several applications to get the effect you want.

OK, here we go:

1. Use a mild solution of 20% salammoniac (get at metal supply stores) dissolved in 80% distilled water.

2. Apply a solution of 50% Dormant Spray (Lime-Sulfur Fungicide found at garden supply stores) and 50% distilled water.

3. Mix up a solution of salt (10%), liquid ammonia cleaner (20%), ammonium chloride (10%), and wine vinegar (60%). Ammonium chloride can be found at chemical supply stores or online.

4. Place your copper bird feeder in a plastic or glass air-tight container. Cover the copper with a light layer of salt and put a bowl of ammonia with it. Seal the container overnight.

5. You can also buy a copper patina solution at your craft store and follow the directions. Works every time.

Now that i have told you how to speed up the patina process of your copper bird feeder I will point out some ways you can slow or completely stop the process once you have reached your desired color.

This is a pretty simple thing to do again make sure your copper parts are well cleaned and the apply a thin coat of clear lacquer following the manufacturers directions. You can also purchase a coating called Everbrite that works very nicely.

So with that information in hand find the perfect copper bird feeder that is right for you and your wild birds and then follow the steps above to speed up or slow down the patina process or just let the copper age naturally.

Once you have found that special spot for your decorative copper bird feeder you can be sure it will add a touch of class and elegance to you backyard or garden that you just can’t get with any other metal feeder.

Pileated Woodpecker Builds a Nest

April 2nd, 2010 wwiii No comments

Pileated Woodpecker in Action

This is some fantastic footage of aPileated Woodpecker excavating a nesting cavity we found on youtube and thought we would share here for those who have not seen it

The Pileated Woodpecker depends on the existence of large dead trees, or snags, in the forest for their nesting, feeding and roosting sites. Not only are these dead trees essential to the Pileated Woodpecker, but their abandoned nests become the future nests for other woodland species like squirrels, wood ducks, and other birds and animals.

Once these large dead trees fall to the ground, they continue to provide habitat for many other species, such as insects, toads, and salamanders. The downed, decaying wood is the future soil of the forest. Without this decaying woody matter, many of the nutrients and fungal components of the forest floor would not develop sufficiently to maintain healthy forest conditions.

A healthy forest is a system of finely tuned relationships between the soil, plants and animals. The successful nesting of the woodpeckers is an annual reminder of one such functioning relationship.

Hope you enoy the video!

We will post an article in the near future on choosing a decorative bird feeder that would be good for attracting woodpeckers to your backyard.

Choosing a Bird Feeder

Which Bird Feeder

Adding a decorative bird feeder can be the best thing that you can add to your patio, backyard or garden. Decorative bird feeders can often be the focal point in a backyard drawing your visitors eye as they enter your botanical oasis. A well placed bird feeder can turn a dreary corner into one that is teaming with color and life.

Bird Feeder Placement

Placement is important if you are actually feeding birds and not just decorating your yard. If you’re not going to feed birds then by all means put your fancy new bird feeder where ever suits you best but if you plan to really put some seed mixes or suet out in those feeders for the birds you will want a little more information. Selecting a really beautiful decorative bird feeder should be a decision based on your personal tastes of course but also what type of foods you plans to feed and which species of birds you would like to attract.

The key to selecting a decorative bird feeder that both you and your birds will love is knowing the benefits in each birdfeeder type, and how they can be of benefit to you and your feathered friends. For instance, a platform feeder will invite birds of all kinds, because it’s a large, open space.

Bird Feeder Pests

However, birds will not be the only ones coming to visit: this type of feeder depending on what you put in it. Squirrels, chipmunks and other rodents will certainly be attracted to food low to the ground but there are some bird species that prefer to feed at ground level like robins and juncos. Personally we think these aren’t really very decorative and we don’t use them often, sometimes to put out special treats for a short period of time, but that’s about it.

A good decorative bird feeder that will protect your seed from other animals least a little bit in the wild is the hopper-style feeder. This is a simple feeder design and comes in a wide assortment of decorative motifs. The great thing about hopper feeders is that they can hold and dispense a lot of seed and encourage birds of all sizes to visit. However, these kinds of seed feeders can retain moisture after a rain, causing unused seed to mold, resulting in a nasty mess.

If smaller birds are more your kind of game, consider utilizing a tube bird feeder. Decorative tube bird feeders have several perches and openings along a hollow tube, that dispenses the seed as the birds eat. This type of feeder attracts many different species of wild birds and is easily filled and cleaned.

Depending on the birds you want to attract, another option to consider would be a decorative suet cage feeder. This type of feeder is geared towards attracting larger birds to your backyard or garden like woodpeckers. Chickadees and even nuthatches will want to feed from your lovely wire framed bird diner.

Despite what some may think, selecting the most appropriate decorative bird feeder for your backyard or garden is not for the birds. Instead, it’s a well planned investment that can help bridge the gap between the great outdoors, and where your patio begins.
