Pileated Woodpecker Builds a Nest

April 2nd, 2010 wwiii No comments

Pileated Woodpecker in Action

This is some fantastic footage of aPileated Woodpecker excavating a nesting cavity we found on youtube and thought we would share here for those who have not seen it

The Pileated Woodpecker depends on the existence of large dead trees, or snags, in the forest for their nesting, feeding and roosting sites. Not only are these dead trees essential to the Pileated Woodpecker, but their abandoned nests become the future nests for other woodland species like squirrels, wood ducks, and other birds and animals.

Once these large dead trees fall to the ground, they continue to provide habitat for many other species, such as insects, toads, and salamanders. The downed, decaying wood is the future soil of the forest. Without this decaying woody matter, many of the nutrients and fungal components of the forest floor would not develop sufficiently to maintain healthy forest conditions.

A healthy forest is a system of finely tuned relationships between the soil, plants and animals. The successful nesting of the woodpeckers is an annual reminder of one such functioning relationship.

Hope you enoy the video!

We will post an article in the near future on choosing a decorative bird feeder that would be good for attracting woodpeckers to your backyard.
